The State 91Ô­´´ of Education has multiple responsibilities under the charter school lawÌý()Ìýfor administration, oversight,Ìýand reporting. Its primary responsibility is approval of school districtsÌýthat apply to be charter school authorizers. Through its representation on the , it alsoÌýparticipatesÌýin theÌýauthorizationÌýof charter schools. For detailed information about charter schools, see the Charter Schools FAQ.

SBE Statutory Duties for Charter Schools

  • Screen, approve, contract with, and oversee the performance and effectiveness of school districts that authorize charter schools within their boundariesÌý
  • Establish a statewide formula for an authorizer oversight feeÌý
  • Certify charter school applications approved byÌýthe 91Ô­´´ Charter School CommissionÌýor a district authorizer between approval and contract ratification (to ensure there is space available within the 40 maximumÌýschoolsÌýallowed by law).ÌýNote that charter school applications are not currently being accepted.Ìý
  • Create annual charter school report for Governor, Legislature,ÌýandÌýpublic at largeÌý
  • Review andÌýdetermineÌýwhether to grantÌýcharter contract transferÌýpetitionsÌý
  • Include all charter schools inÌýitsÌýpublic school system oversight, including accountability measures.Ìý
  • SBE chair, orÌýdesignee, servesÌýas a member of the Charter School CommissionÌý
